Very little is known about the actual origins of the game known as Omaha poker. While the normal assumption is made that it originated in Omaha, Nebraska, there is no evidence to support this.
Most believe that Omaha poker was created around the same time as the popular Texas Hold’em, this is due to the fact that the games are so similar in nature. However, Omaha has not received the same kind of support as Texas Hold’em, and a lot of this is due to the World Series Of Poker ( WSOP ) main event using the Hold’em variation.
In the early 1980’s Omaha poker found its way into the Las Vegas game rooms and its future was secure. While it is not the most popular of all the poker games, it does have a good foot hold and is popular in the online poker world. One of the things that helps it is the fact that it is a version used in some of the World Series Of Poker events each year.
There is very little that is different about the whole game of Omaha besides the number of cards that you will receive and how you will play them. When you are dealt a hand in Texas Hold’em you will receive two hole cards that you are free to play. In the Omaha version you will receive four hole cards.
The major difference is the way that you must play these hole cards. In the Texas Hold’em version you are free to play the board, which means you do not have to use the hole cards that you are using but you can instead use all five of the community cards.
In the Omaha version you are required to use at least two of the hole cards that you are holding. This makes the game a bit more difficult and it can also lead to some very exciting game play along the way.
An example would be this: If there are five hearts in the community cards which would be a flush you would have a win based on your hole cards value in Texas Holdem. In the Omaha version you would have to have two hearts in your hole cards to win the hand and have the higher hand on top of that.
Again this is very much like the Texas Hold’em version. The dealer in the hands is someone that is always changing and it is signified by the dealer button. The player that is the dealer is said to be on the button in most of the common jargon for the game.
The player directly to the left of the dealer will place the small blind while the player directly to that player’s left will place the big blind. The small and the big blind are set before the game is started. In most cases the small blind is exactly half of the big blind.
A common variation is to have the blinds gradually increase in value as the rounds are played.
First Round Betting
The dealer will deal each player four cards, one at a time starting with the player to their left. These cards are played face down and are commonly known as hole cards.
Each player should keep in mind that they can only use two of the hole cards that they are dealt with the community cards that will be placed on the table.
Once the cards are dealt the betting will begin. This starts with the player that is directly to the left of the big blind. They have the option to fold, bet or raise.
The player that chooses to fold must surrender their cards and they are out for the round. The player that bets must place a bet that is equal to the big blind. If a player chooses to raise then they must place an amount that is greater than the big blind.
The dealer will burn one card from the top of the deck, which means to discard it, and then place three cards face up on the table. These are the first three community cards and are known as the flop.
Once again a round of betting will begin in the same order as the first round. Players are betting on their hands and how strong they believe them to be.
Turn and River Betting
The dealer will then burn a card and reveal the turn card, the fourth in the community cards. All players still in the game are required to bet the hand before play continues.
Then the dealer will burn a card and reveal the river card. This is the fifth and final of the community cards. Once this card has been revealed the final round of betting begins.
Once all bets are complete the player who started the betting must show his or her cards. The player with the highest five card poker hand that includes two of their four hole cards wins the hand.
